7 Days of Baskets, Day 1: The Waistcoat Stitch

For Day 1 of the 7 Days of Baskets series, we’re starting with one of my favorite stitches for structure and style, the waistcoat stitch, also known as the center single crochet or knit stitch. This stitch is sturdy, making it perfect for baskets that need to stand tall and hold their shape.
In today’s tutorial, you'll learn the anatomy of a single crochet stitch, I’ll show you how to work the waistcoat stitch slowly and clearly, and we’ll talk about why I love using it for my basket projects. If you’ve ever wanted to create a crochet basket that looks refined and store bought, this is the stitch for you.

Yarn: 5mm braided cotton cord (Im using the cord from Bobbiny)
Hook: 8mm crochet hook (I’m using the BeKnitting set)

✨ What is the Waistcoat Stitch?
The waistcoat stitch is essentially a modified single crochet, worked between the left and right post of the stitch from the previous row instead of under the front and back loops. The result is a dense, knit-like texture that stands tall.
I use the waistcoat stitch in several of my basket designs. It’s also a great option for bags, rugs and stuffed animals.
✨ How to work the Waistcoat Stitch?
Insert your hook between the left and right post of the stitch from the previous round.
Yarn over and pull up a loop. You should have two loops on your hook.
Yarn over and pull through both loops.
All done! Easy right?!
